Term 2 – Week 1
Welcome back!
We have really enjoyed our first week back after our break.
As writers this week we have started reading a new book called Odd and the Frost Giants. We are looking forward to exploring this book more and discovering new characters. We discussed our predictions for what might happen in the book…
In our learning partners p we enjoyed looking through dictionaries to help us understand new vocabulary in the story.
In our science lessons we recapped our knowledge of forces and started thinking about where our learning journey can take us. We played a game of science charades where our partner had to guess the force and if it started the movement or stopped it.
As part of our enquiry, we had a very special visitor come to Uphill this week. We met Earnwald, an Anglo-Saxon who told us all about the lives and times of the Vikings and the Anglo-Saxons. We enjoyed acting out the battle of Eddington when King Alfred fought with the Viking leader Guthrum. This led to a peace treaty and King Alfred giving the Viking their own land known as Danelaw.
After our amazing session we continued our learning about the Vikings and their invasions. We watched some really interesting videos about the invasion of the monastery at Lindisfarne in 793AD. Then we hot seated some ‘Anglo-Saxon villagers’ about how it felt to be invaded and a few ‘Vicious Vikings’ to hear their perspective of the raid too!
For PE this week we finished off last terms lessons and had the opportunity to show our balancing skills. We used balloons to tap into the balance with a learning partner all whilst standing on one leg and maintaining balance.
Alongside our balloon lesson we also started looking at our football skills. We played ‘mud monsters’ where we practiced our dribbling skills and if we touched a cone we were ‘stuck’ and had to rely on our friends to help us out!
As citizens we explored differences and what assumptions we can make about people before truly knowing them. We found it interesting that we all had different opinions and views.
