Term 2 – Week 5
Year 3/4 – here is some of our learning this week…
Project
In our project lesson this week, we put our geographical skills to the test. We used an atlas to explore the names of the villages, towns and cities found in England. Lots of places were named during Viking times. We discovered that their endings have different meanings as Vikings named places using the features found near them. For example a place ending with -fell meant it was near a hill or moorland; the ending -gate meant it was near a road and the ending -dale meant it was in a valley. When we got stuck finding a particular ending, our teacher gave us clues using compass directions to help steer us in the right direction!
Science
In Science, we have been exploring magnets in more depth. We learned that the Earth acts as one big (but weak!) magnet due to the iron in its core. This means that a compass will always point North. We then investigated and observed what would happen when a magnet is next to a compass.
Being a Citizen
As our topic in PSHE this term, we have been ‘celebrating difference’. This week we thought about all the things which make us unique and special. It is often easier to think about what makes other people special and it can be hard to think positively about ourselves. We made a paperchain to celebrate all the things which make us special…
Art
We looked at drawing, using perspective this week. It’s not an easy skill to master but we are working hard to improve…
Work of the Week
Sputnik – Joseph and Zachary for some great investigation work in Science working with magnets.
Voyager – Oliver for some super maths work when times and dividing numbers by 10 and 100.
Chandra – Maisie for an excellent piece of writing based on ‘The Last Viking’.
