Term 6 Week 4

We’ve made it through what has been an extremely hot week, and I would like to say a huge well done to all of the children for the positive attitude and resilience they have shown. Despite the challenging temperatures, everyone has continued to work hard and do some excellent learning across the curriculum. 
 
As writers, we have been laying the foundations for writing our own stories inspired by Flotsam. The children have been exploring a range of writing techniques to help make their narratives more engaging and descriptive. We have focused on using expanded noun phrases and prepositional phrases to add detail, while also investigating story structure and how authors build interest and suspense for their readers. The children have generated some fantastic ideas and are looking forward to developing these into their own stories. 
 
As mathematicians, we have been learning about time, with a particular focus on hours, minutes and seconds. The children have been developing their understanding of the relationships between different units of time, solving problems and practising their calculation skills in a variety of contexts. 
 
In Science, we have been investigating materials that are conductors and insulators. The children made predictions about which materials would allow electricity to pass through them and then worked scientifically to test their ideas. They enjoyed building simple circuits and using their results to decide whether different materials conducted electricity or acted as insulators. It was fantastic to see such thoughtful scientific discussions and careful testing taking place. 

As artists, we continued to work on our collage techniques with a mixture of blocking and parts of an image to create a piece of work related to our enquiry comparing Spain and the UK.

Well done to everyone for continuing to work so hard and maintain such high standards of learning in very warm conditions. We hope you all have a restful and enjoyable weekend.
