Week beginning 16th January
Yet again it has been a very busy week in Year 3 and 4.
During our enquiry work, we have been finding out why Europeans from the 15 century went exploring. This week we discovered that it was to establish trade routes, for gold, silk and spices and for scientific discovery.
In English we have been writing historical time slip stories. We imagined what it would be like for our characters if they travelled back in time. To help us with our writing we used rubrics to identify features in historical narratives and have now tried to include these in our own stories…
Our work in science this term is on rocks. So far, we have found out about the layers of the Earth, tectonic plates and volcanoes. Excitedly, we carried out an experiment making a volcano using bicarbonate of soda, vinegar and washing up liquid. We discovered that we had created a chemical reaction. By mixing acid and alkali, bubbles of CO2 were released rather like a pyroclastic flow. These are very fast and extremely dangerous.
On Thursday, The North Somerset P.E. Sports Association came into school to teach the children in Year 3 and 4 two new sports – boccia, which is an indoor target sport using soft leather balls, and modern curling. We had so much fun learning something new!
