Week beginning 31st October

Term 2

Welcome back after the half term break.

As always, we have been busy this week. In English, we have been writing our own suspense stories. Previously, we had listened to and learned about Lara’s visit to the spooky manor house. We hot seated Lara so that we could find out about why she went to the ruined manor house and how she felt. This helped us when we were considering our characters feelings and motives. We also tried to add suspense by describing what our characters could hear, see, smell and feel.

We have started a new science topic this term which is all about sound. We have discovered that we can feel vibrations whenever sounds are made.  During an experiment, we gently hit a tuning fork and then placed it into a bowl of water. We saw the ripples in the water when we placed the tuning fork into it. The tuning fork vibrated when it was hit, making the sound. These vibrations travelled through the water, making ripples as the water vibrated.

As historians, we have been finding out about the fate of Henry VIII’s flag ship, The Mary Rose. We carried out research about the different types of jobs that the crew did onboard using secondary resources and listening to a pod cast. We also heard the story of Hatch the dog, whose job, was to rid the ship of rats. You can find out more about Hatch and lots of other interesting facts by visiting www.maryrose.org

During art, we found out about the famous French artist Paul Cezanne. We learned that Cezanne was especially famous for creating still life paintings. A still life is an arrangement of objects such as flowers, fruits and bowls. We looked at and talked about some of the techniques Cezanne used and then drew our own still life drawings.
