Term 1 Week 6
We have had another busy week in year 5/6!.
As writers, the children completed their suspense narratives inspired by our class text, Secrets of a Sun King. We were particularly by the effective use of varied sentence starters, rich descriptive language, and the way pupils conveyed characters’ emotions through their actions and reactions rather than simply stating how they felt. The finished pieces demonstrated excellent imagination and a growing understanding of how to build tension and engage the reader. We also spent time practicing of cursive handwriting concentrating on letter formation and size.

As historians, we explored the technology and innovations of Ancient Egypt. The children investigated how Egyptians used irrigation systems and shadufs to support farming along the Nile. They also learned about the importance of papyrus and hieroglyphics for recording taxes, trade and other important information, as well as enabling communication over greater distances. We discussed how metal tools could be used for stone work and boats helped transport heavy materials, making ambitious construction projects, such as the pyramids, possible.

As artists, we applied our understanding of tone, line, depth and pattern to transform our images into impressive pharaoh-inspired pieces of artwork. The children carefully considered how these artistic techniques could be used to create striking effects, and the finished work showcased both creativity and attention to detail. We were incredibly proud of the high standard of artwork produced.

As citizens, we explored the importance of effective teamwork. Working in groups, the children were challenged to build the tallest tower possible using only paper and sellotape, with no rules or assigned roles. They then repeated the task, this time with each team member taking on a specific responsibility. Afterwards, we reflected on how the different approaches affected communication, organisation and success. This led to some thoughtful discussions, and together we created six key classroom rules for effective group work that we will continue to use throughout the year.

It has been a fantastic week filled with hard work, enthusiasm and determination. We are very proud of all the children and look forward to another exciting week of learning ahead!
