Term 1 Week 3

We have had a busy week in Year 2!

As scientists, we have started our new science topic called States of Matter. We learned that everything around us is made of matter and matter is anything with a weight. Matter can be categorised into solids, liquids and gases. Particles and atoms are what all matter is made of and depending on how the particles are arranged depends on whether something is a solid, a liquid or a gas. We used cheerios to work scientifically and present our new knowledge to show how particles are arranged. In a solid, particles are tightly packed together. In a liquid, particles have a bit of space and flow around each other. In a gas, particles are spread out and fill the space that they have.

As mathematicians, we have been partitioning numbers into tens and ones in a variety of ways. We started by using equipment to show our understanding and then moved on to writing numbers to become fluent before applying our knowledge to problem solving and reasoning problems.

As readers and writers, we have started our new book ‘ The lighthouse keepers lunch’. We started the week by making predictions as to what we thought the story would be about before we found out the title. We then built on our predictions once we knew what the book was called and finally we thought about what we liked and disliked about the book and what the book reminded us of.

As athletes, we have been learning how to successfully throw and catch a ball and we will apply these skills later on in the term when we play games of basketball. We have also been thinking about our footwork and how to move and change direction quickly whilst staying balanced.
