Term 2 Week 2
What a busy week it has been!
As scientists, we started a new unit looking at the body and the systems within the body. This week we focused on the skeleton. We learned that we have a skeleton so that we can move, be supported upright and to protect our organs. We then thought about our bones and what makes them strong. Using chicken bones, we observed that bones are strong and can’t be broken easily. We then extended our thinking and set up a test to see if calcium really does make our bones strong. We had a pot on bones with vinegar (an acid to remove the calcium) and a pot of bones without vinegar. We left them for a few days then opened the pots. We concluded that calcium really does make our bones strong as the bones that had been left in the vinegar could no be bent and broken.
As writers, we continued to learn about Florence Nightingale and gather facts for our biographies. We loved hot seating ‘Florence’ and asking her questions.
As mathematicians and artists, we combined the 2 subjects to think about symmetry in preparation for CLF’s big day of maths. We drew symmetrical patterns and then made our patterns using cubes.
As readers, we loved taking part in World Book Day activities. We enjoyed bedtime stories, stop and read, the mask competition and getting dressed up as our favourite book characters.
