Week 3
It had been another busy week in Pluto and Jupiter.
In maths, we are continuing our work on place value. We have been using Dienes apparatus to find out how many tens and ones are in two digit numbers. We then looked at how we can partition these numbers in different ways using tens and ones.
We have been reading the story, ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’ which we have really enjoyed. It is about some seagulls who steal the lighthouse keeper’s food. In groups, we acted out parts of the story to help us find out more about the characters. We thought of lots of adjectives to describe the seagulls such as pesky, naughty, sneaky and crafty. Next we wrote our own descriptions of the seagulls.
In our enquiry work, we are being geographers. We have sorted human and physical features around Uphill. We used maps to identify these different features and then used a compass to decide whether these are north, east, south and west of our school. Billy told us a great rhyme to remember the points of the compass,
Naughty Elephants Squirt Water.
During science, we have been learning how everything is made up of tiny atoms that you can not see with the naked eye. We used Cheerios to show how the particles are arranged in solids, liquids and gases. It was great fun and it was a bit of a challenge not to eat the Cheerios all up!
This week, we also worked hard to create a scarecrow for the Uphill Village Scarecrow Festival. Our scarecrow was based on the story, ‘The Rainbow Fish’. Both classes made and decorated scales to cover our fish. We hope that you got the chance to see it when you were out and about in Uphill at the weekend.
