Week Beg: 28th February

EYFS

This week we have started our next enquiry project ‘ Which is he best material’. We have been naming and finding different materials within our classroom. Can you go on a material hunt at home? How many metal items can you find? What words could you use to describe metal e.g. strong, etc.

In Phonics we have been learning new sounds ow (cow) and oi (coin) . Can you think of any words for these sounds? Can you write them using our new sounds?

This week in Maths, the children will continue to engage with activities that draw attention to the purpose of counting – to find out ‘how many’ objects there are. The children will also revisit the concept of cardinality – the idea that the last number in the count tells us how many things there are altogether. They will  become secure enough with their counting skills to be able to count out a set of objects from a larger set, remembering the ‘stopping number’ and knowing that this means they have selected the correct number.

The children will develop their understanding of the ordinal aspect by consolidating their understanding that each number has a value of ‘1 more’ than the previous number. Images of the Numberblocks will be used, alongside the children’s own fingers, to represent ‘5 and a bit’ quantities, which will help to embed this key understanding.

Can you make a numberblock staircase at home using lego or cubes? What happens each time? What number comes after 5? What number is 1 more than 4?

We are looking forward to seeing everyone’s World book day costumes tomorrow.

YEAR 1

This week we have started our next enquiry project ‘ Which is he best material’. We have been naming and finding different materials within our classroom. Can you go on a material hunt at home? How many metal items can you find? What words could you use to describe metal e.g. strong, etc.
In English we have been learning class poems.

In Phonics we have been learnign about ‘best bet’ For example most likely the ay sound at the ned of words will be ay. Whereas the ai / a-e sound in the middle of words will be ai or a-e. Can you think of a word for each different ‘ay’ sound? Can you write a sentence or question for each one?

In Maths we have been looking at numbers to 50 e.g. 41 is 4 tens and 1 one. We have been then comparing them e.g. 54 is more than 23. 12 is less than 23. We have been using our symbols to compare these numbers <, >, =.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone’s World book day costumes tomorrow.
Have a great week
