Term 1- Week 6
Week 6
In phonics we have been learning new phonemes (sounds) : ck, e, u and r in Foundation and in year one have been learning about contractions such as: ‘we’re, he’ll, they’d’.
In Maths this week, foundation continued to use ‘perceptual’ subitising – instant recognition – by saying the number of sounds that they can hear, such as claps or drum beats, without needing to count. When investigating the shapes made by Numberblock Four and making similar arrangements, we developed our skills of ‘conceptual’ subitising. Year 1 children continued exploring how we use part whole models to partition 2 digit numbers into tens and ones.
As Geographers, we discussed what features we find on a map and then created our own map to use to get from the classroom to the school office. We used directional language such as north, east, south and west.
In writing, we drew a map of our day and then used this to help us write a recount of our day. We used time connectives in our writing to help us explain the order of the day.
This week, foundation have enjoyed retelling and acting out the bear hunt story. We cut pictures out and wrote the initial sound next to each picture. We have had great fun exploring mixing colours and collage materials this week.
As artists we studied other artists such as Picasso and practised our own ‘one line’ drawings.
