Week 2

In phonics, Year 1 have been learning alternative spelling e.g. /n/ (gnat), /k/ (knit) /r/ wrap, /s/ (listen) We have talked about n, k, r, s being silent letters in words. EYFS have been learning to read and write words containing 4 phonemes e.g. m and p as in ramp n and d as in land, n and k as in bank, n and t as in sent.

We have enjoyed a new book ‘ In every house, in every street’. After reading this book we discussed how houses were different and how houses were the same and then did some descriptive writing about the houses in the book.

In Maths EYFS have been looking at ways to make 6, doubling numbers and what an odd and an even number is. We also have been doing some repeating patterns with pegs and other resources. Year 1 have been recapping our knowledge of doubles and starting to share amounts( early division) . At home can you give your child plates and pasta pieces to solve these problems: 10 shared by 2, 20 shared by 5.

As Scientists this week we have been investigating what material objects have been made of and started looking at how we can group materials. We have enjoyed investigating with magnets and talking about how magnets work and what they attract. We have also enjoyed investigating different materials including using magnets around the classroom.

As artists this term we are doing collaging. We learnt about a new artist; Henry Matisse before experimenting with collaging.

In computing this week, Year 1 were using the tools on paint to create self portraits and created some master pieces!
