Reading Week

Dear Parents/Carers,

We will be celebrating Reading Week throughout the week commencing Monday 27th February 2023 &, as part of this, celebrating World Book Day on Friday 3rd March. Please see the events timetable attached. There are lots of reading activities that your child will be taking part in over the week to celebrate our love of books.

To celebrate World Book Day on Friday 3rd March, we would like the children to come to school dressed as their favourite book character. We do not want people to feel that money needs to be spent to become a character from a book, home assembled costumes are fine! Why not wear a stripy top, glasses and a hat for ‘Where’s Wally?’. On World Book Day every child will receive a £1 book token that can be used at the book fayre which will be held on 9th & 10th March 2023.

Last year, we were amazed by your spoon character creations and to celebrate this year’s Reading Week, would like to invite your child to take part in our ‘Story in a Jar’ competition. Your child is encouraged to think of a book character and put clues in the jar for others to guess your favourite book. Teachers will take a photo of your child’s creation and the chosen book before putting them on display for the whole school to admire. To help with this, please bring into school the book the clues are based on along with the jar after half term.  There will be one winner per year group.

On Wednesday 1st March, we are inviting EYFS/KS1 children into a story time session at 5:30pm. Children can come into school with their parent(s), dressed in their pyjamas/dressing gowns/onesies (if they wish) and bring a warm drink of hot chocolate along with them. They will settle down with their parent while the class teachers read them a story. This is such a popular event, we really recommend families to come along. Please remember children must be accompanied by an adult.

We would also like to share a link to FREE audiobooks for all readers, available for World Book Day 2023 from Thursday 16th February. Audiobooks are a brilliant way of enjoying stories, whether you’re reading together as a family, or taking some time to listen alone. https://www.worldbookday.com/world-of-stories/

The book fair will be visiting Uphill Village Academy, EYFS & KS1 on Thursday 9th March and Friday 10th March for KS2 children, from 3.15pm until 3.45pm, you are invited to come and browse the fantastic selection of books and purchase any that you and your child are interested in.

The book tokens given out on World Book Day can be used at the book fair for £1 off any book. Please be aware that the “free” book using the token can only be purchased in official book stores. Thank you for your continued support.
