Scarlet Fever in EYFS Class

Dear Parents/Carers,

A child in one of our EYFS/Year 1 classes has been diagnosed with scarlet fever. Scarlett fever is a contagious infection which can be easily treated with antibiotics. However, it is contagious for up to six (6) days prior to any symptoms showing, so can be inadvertently transmitted within a school setting.

The first signs of scarlet fever are a rash and flu-like symptoms, including a high temperature, a sore throat and swollen neck glands. The rash would usually appear within 12 to 48 hours of symptoms starting and will have an appearance of small, raised bumps which will make the skin feel rough, like sandpaper.

If your child displays any of these symptoms, please be cautious and seek advice from your GP. If your GP diagnoses scarlet fever, your child should remain off school for the first 24 hours after starting antibiotic treatment. Without a GP diagnosis your child should continue to attend school if they are well enough.

Yours sincerely
