Welcome to EYFS/Year 1
Dear Parents/Carers,
It is so lovely to see our Year 1 families back in school and we have enjoyed meeting with and settling in our new EYFS pupils. We have been so impressed with how well your children have settled into the routines of school.
You will have met the class teams but here is a reminder:
Class Teacher Teaching Partner
Rainbow class Miss Arnall Miss Darby
Sunshine class Mrs Patrick & Mrs Grey Mrs Lewis
Saturn class Mrs Sims Mrs Watson
Mrs Hetherington will work in Rainbow class on Tuesday afternoons, Saturn class on Thursdays and Sunshine class alternate Tuesday & Friday mornings.
Our enquiry this term is ‘What is Our Place in the UK?’ We will be ‘geographers’ and ‘scientists’ this term, finding out about the local area in which we live and its location within the United Kingdom.
As part of our project, we will be looking at the features of Uphill Village. We will be exploring our local area and creating maps to direct us around the village. We will look at Uphill Village in the context of being based in the south west of the United Kingdom. We will build on this, looking at the four nations that make up the United Kingdom and their Capital cities.
To help your child with this enquiry, you might like to take your child on a walk around the village; what is in Uphill? Can you find the park or the church?
Reading
EYFS children will bring home a sharing book. The box of sharing boxes will be placed outside classrooms for you to change as and when you want to at the end of the day. Please feel free to read and share other books that you have at home. Later in the year your children will bring home a phonics based book to read to you. More information about this will follow at a later date.
Year 1 children will bring two books home a week and we will change these weekly. One will be a phonics based book for them to read to you and one will be a book for you to share together.
Please record the name of the book you are reading and share a comment in your child’s home school diary. Home school diaries will be checked once a week and children can work towards gaining ‘Regular Reading’ awards for sharing/reading books with an adult at home. We have an expectation that regular reading/sharing of books at home will be at least 3 times a week please.
Physical Education
Each class will take part in PE lessons twice a week. Usually, PE is held on the same days each week but occasionally these need to change, so it is important your child has their PE kit in school every day.
PE days
Rainbow class Monday and Wednesday
Sunshine class Monday and Thursday
Saturn class Monday and Tuesday
Tapestry
Over the next few weeks’ we will be issuing new EYFS parents with an activation email to access their child’s Tapestry account. Once you receive this it is important to activate your child’s account as soon as possible. Parents of Year 1 children can continue to use their existing Tapestry account.
Tapestry allows parents to see updates of work and activities completed in class and is the way we communicate directly with our EYFS &Year 1 parents through our weekly memo. Parents are welcome to send us photos or comments about what your child has been doing at home through this platform too.
Tapestry is a fantastic resource to parents and ourselves to share children’s learning between home and school. Year 1 will continue as last year.
Contact
There will be a member of staff from the EYFS/Year 1 team at the gate each morning if you need to let us know about any concerns with your child(ren). However, please feel free to chat to your child’s class teacher at the end of the day when you collect from the classroom door.
We also have a year group email address for any classroom based questions or queries [email protected] General school queries should be directed to the office team at [email protected]
Thank you for your ongoing support
