Welcome to EYFS/Year 1

Dear Parents/Carers,

It is so lovely to see our Year 1 families back in school and we have enjoyed the last few weeks settling our new EYFS pupils into school. We have been so impressed with how well your children have settled into the routines of school.

Our project this term is ‘What is a Journey?’ We will be ‘geographers’ and ‘scientists’ this term, finding out about the local area in which we live and its location within the United Kingdom.

As part of our project, we will be looking at the features of Uphill Village. We will be exploring our local area and creating maps to direct us around the village. We will look at Uphill Village in the context of being based in the South West of the United Kingdom. We will build on this, looking at the four nations that make up the United Kingdom and their Capital cities.

To help your child with this project, you might like to take your child on a walk around the village; what is in Uphill? Can you find the park or the church?

Please find attached our Knowledge Organiser; this shows the main books we will be using this term and helps identify some key vocabulary and questions you can ask your child linked to our project.

Reading

EYFS children will have brought home a sharing book. The box of sharing boxes will be placed outside classrooms for you to change as and when you want to at the end of the day. Please feel free to read and share other books that you have at home. Year 1 children will bring two books home a week and we will change these weekly.

Please record the name of the book you are reading and share a comment in your child’s home school diary. Home school diaries will be checked once a week and children can work towards gaining ‘Regular Reading’ awards for sharing/reading books with an adult at home. We have an expectation that regular reading/sharing of books at home will be at least 3 times a week please.

P.E.

P.E. days are Mondays and Thursdays. Children will keep their P.E. kits in school and change into them within school.

Tapestry

All new EYFS parents should now have access to Tapestry and should have received an activation email. If you haven’t already done so, please ensure you have activated your account as soon as possible. Parents of Year 1 children can continue to use their existing Tapestry account.

Tapestry allows parents to see updates of work and activities completed in class and is the way we communicate directly with our EYFS & Year 1 parents through our weekly memo. Parents are welcome to send us photos or comments about what your child has been doing at home through this platform too.

Tapestry is a fantastic resource to parents and ourselves to share children’s learning between home and school. Year 1 will continue like last year.

Contact

There will be a member of staff from the EYFS/Year 1 team at the gate each morning if you need to let us know about any concerns with your child(ren). However, please feel free to chat to your child’s class teacher at the end of the day when you collect from the classroom door.

We also have a year group email address for any classroom based questions or queries [email protected]

General school queries should be directed to the office team at [email protected]

We have recorded a ‘Welcome to…….’ video for each class, which is available to view through our YouTube channel. Please click on the link below
