Welcome to EYFS/Year 1

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome to EYFS & Year 1. It is so lovely to see our Year 1 families back in school. We have enjoyed the last week meeting our new EYFS children and settling them into school. We have been so impressed with how well your children have settled back into the routine of school.

The morning has been based on ‘Community Building’ within our classes and our Year 1 children are being buddies for our EYFS children. During the afternoons, Year 1 have been focusing on ‘Hope’ where each class have presented a poem and work to the rest of the school. You can find this fabulous assembly on our website.

Our project this term is’ E is for Explorers’. We will be ‘geographers’ and ‘historians’ finding out about the place in which we live and comparing it to other places in the United Kingdom.

As part of this project we will be looking at features of Uphill and Weston-super-Mare including: The Pier, The Tropicana, The Playhouse Theatre and our school. We will be comparing how these have changed over time. We will be creating maps of our school and Uphill. We will then be looking at the four nations that make up the United Kingdom as well as their Capital cities.

You may like to take your child on a walk to find these places. You could look at old and new photos of Uphill or Weston-super-Mare and discuss what has changed. As part of our science learning this term we will be looking at seasonal change, starting with Autumn and how weather changes over time. You could go on an Autumn walk with your child to have a look at trees and discuss what has changed and why this has changed.

Please find attached our Knowledge Organiser which shows you the main books we will be using this term. It gives you some key vocabulary and questions you can ask your child linked to our theme.

Reading

EYFS children will have brought home a sharing book; we will change these once a week in class. Please feel free to read other books with your child that you have at home. Year 1 children will bring two books home a week and again these will be changed weekly.

Please record the name of the book you have shared and a comment in their home school dairy. Home school diaries will be checked once a week and children can work towards gaining Regular Reading awards for sharing/reading books with an adult at home (This needs to be at least 3 times a week, please).

P.E.

P.E. days are Mondays and Thursdays. Children need to wear P.E. kit to school on these days. They will stay in their P.E. kit all day so a hoodie and joggers in colder months is recommended. Please can we ask children to wear trainers if possible as they will be accessing our outside area during the day.

Tapestry

All children are now on Tapestry. As a parent you should have received an activation email. Please activate your account as soon as possible, thank you to the parents who have already done so. You can see updates of work/activities completed in class and we will be sending our weekly memos to you through this service. Parents are welcome to send in photos/comments about what your child has been doing at home through tapestry. It really is a fantastic resource to share your child’s learning between home and school.
