Welcome to Year 1
Dear Parents/Carers,
We are delighted to welcome your child to Year 1 and are looking forward to another successful year.
Children in Year 1 will be following the National Curriculum rather than working within the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. We teach Phonics, Maths and English daily in Year 1 (mornings). English & Maths will become increasingly more independent, preparing for Year 2.
Our enquiry question for term 1 is ‘What are the properties of everyday materials?’ which is a science-based enquiry which concludes at the end of term with a design & technology project. Our term 2 enquiry question is ‘Which technology invention is the most significant?’. This is a history-based enquiry and will be further supported by us taking the Year 1 children on local walks.
To support reading development, we will continue to hold daily phonics lessons throughout the year. Later on in the year, in June, your child will take part in the Government’s national phonics screening check, but we will provide parents with more information on this nearer the time.
Please continue to change your child’s reading books outside each classroom after school. We will continue to change your child’s phonics reading book once a week during guided reading. We encourage parents to read with their child at home at least 3 times a week. We reward regular reading with weekly reading certificates given out during assemblies.
Tapestry will continue to record your child’s learning where you will see photos, conversations and video assessments. Our weekly memo will be posted to Tapestry which will keep you informed of the week’s learning across year 1 and giving you ideas for learning at home. If you have any photos or experiences you wish to share please continue to upload these, we really love seeing them.
Each class has P.E twice a week. Please encourage your child to dress themselves at home as this really helps us; getting dressed independently is great development for your child. P.E kits should be kept in school and consist of a white t-shirt, black or navy shorts, black trainers or daps. We will send your child’s P.E. kit home at the end of term. Please label all P.E kit/clothes.
Toileting accidents still happen in Year 1, so please don’t worry. Please provide extra pants/socks in their P.E bag or book bag.
As children in Year 1 are over 5 years of age, they no longer qualify for the national milk scheme. If your child still wishes to receive milk, please contact School Milk Services directly to order this. Fruit continues to be provided daily for children in Year 1 that wish to have it.
If you would like to speak to us, please speak to a member of the team at collection time, alternatively you can email us at eyfsandyear1@uva.clf.uk
Kind regards
EYFS/Year1 Team
