Welcome to Year 3/4

Dear Parents/Carers,

It has been wonderful meeting the Year 3 children, as well as welcoming the Year 4’s back. The year 4 children have been amazing at making the year 3’s feel welcome and showing them where to put things. The year 3’s are also doing a fantastic job of settling into their new classes.

Learning

We will start the year by learning about the Tudors, answering our big question ‘Who was the greatest monarch of the Tudor age?’  We will also be embarking on a fantastic school trip to the Matthew on Thursday 15th October. We will be sending out more information in due course.

As scientists, we will be learning about light. We look forward to teaching the children about how we see light, how shadows work and what a reflection is.

Homework

We continue to use the app Sumdog for our homework. Log in details can be found in their reading diaries once we have set them all up. Please remind your child not to share their username and password with others.

PE

We aim to teach PE twice a week. One session will be indoors, and one session will be held outdoors, weather depending.

Children should wear a white PE top, black or navy shorts/trousers and trainers. Short shorts and leggings must be worn underneath a skirt. The skirt may then be removed for the PE lesson.

The class PE days are:

  • Chandra- Monday and Tuesday
  • Sputnik- Monday and Thursday
  • Voyager- Monday and Thursday

Excitingly, we begin swimming lessons in Year 3 and 4. Each class will have 5 weeks of swimming. Swimming lessons will be on a Monday afternoon, during the school day. Please ensure you bring in appropriate swimwear for your child when it is their turn for swimming.

This includes a swimming costume/ trunks, a towel, goggles (optional) and a swimming cap if your child has long hair.

  • Voyager will go swimming first.
  • Chandra will go swimming in Term 2.
  • Sputnik will go swimming in Term 3.

Forest school

We also begin forest school in Year 3 and 4. This will take place on a Tuesday afternoon with Mrs Matthews. This is an opportunity for children to explore nature and spend some time outdoors. Please bring a change of old clothes for your child to get changed into and a pair of wellies if you have some (we have limited pairs at school).

Home/School Diaries

These are used to monitor reading and we would ask you to encourage your children to read at home with you at least three times per week. Please can this be recorded in their diaries so we can track the reading they are doing at home as well as in school. We celebrate our reading successes in school and we would love all children to be part of this.

Communication

You can also use the diary to communicate with us. Please remind your child to let the teaching staff know if there’s a note in their diary so we can ensure that it is checked, and we can respond to it. We can also be contacted using our year 3/4 email, year3and4@uva.clf.uk

With thanks for your continued support,

The Year 3/4 Team.

Mr Clark, Mrs Lorimer, Mr Hancock & Miss Stenner.
