Welcome to Year 5/6
Dear Parent/Carer,
It has been wonderful to welcome all of the Year 6s back into their classes over the last week, as well as welcome the new Year 5s into the year group. The Year 6 children have helped to settle their new classmates in and routines are becoming well established.
Over the next few weeks, the Year 6s will have the opportunity to take on prefect responsibilities, and those who are interested can stand for election as a house captain or librarian. All of the Year 6s will become council crew leaders and benefit from leading meetings with groups of children from across the school.
Our project question for this term is ‘How Did Civilisation Evolve During the Stone Age?’ during which we will be exploring the eras of the Stone Age and the beginnings of settlements and agriculture. If any of you have a particular interest or specialism in this area, which you would like to share with us, please do get in touch because we would love to capture your enthusiasm and knowledge to inspire the children even more.
As always, we will strive to develop positive attitudes and learning habits, while teaching continues to ensure that children’s emotional well-being is at the fore. We will identify next steps in learning so that all children work towards being in line with age-related national expectations.
Each week we are setting the following homework:
Spellings– a week to complete (set Monday, due Monday)
- Use spellingframe.co.uk to practice weekly the spelling pattern
- Use readtheory.org to complete at least 20 mins of reading tasks
Maths – a week to complete (set Thursday, due Thursday)
- Paper-based arithmetic activities to be sent home.
Reading
- We would expect children to read at least 3 times a week. Please sign your child’s home school diary if they read out loud to you or quietly to themselves, as we will be checking them weekly in order to celebrate our reading attitudes in Friday’s assembly.
Please do encourage your child to complete their homework independently and on time.
It is an exciting couple of years being in Year 5/6. For many of your children, it will be their last year at primary school. The Year 6 children will no doubt be looking forward to the end of year residential camp and KS2 production, as well as working hard towards their SATs in May. We want them to be happy and successful learners and know that working alongside you at home, they will have the best opportunity to achieve this.
We look forward to catching up with you at the up-coming parent’s evenings on 15th and 16th October but outside of this, if you have questions for the team, please contact us on the year group email address year5and6@uva.clf.uk or catch us in the playground at the end of the day.
Thank you to the Year 5 parents who were able to make our ‘Welcome to Year 5’ session on the 9th and for those who weren’t able to, a copy of the presentation will be included with this letter.
Thank you for your continued support,
Year 5/6 team
Mr Clark, Mrs Haberfield and Miss Hynam
