Welcome to Year 5/6
Dear Parent/Carer,
It has been wonderful to welcome the Year 6s back into their classes over the last week, as well as welcome the new Year 5s into the year group. The Year 6 children have helped to settle their new classmates and routines are becoming well established.
Over the next few weeks, our Year 6s will have the opportunity to take on prefect responsibilities, and those who are interested can stand for election as a house captain or librarian. All the Year 6s will become council crew leaders and benefit from leading meetings with groups of children from across the school.
Our enquiry big question for this term is ‘How did the Ancient Egyptian civilisation evolve?’, where we will be exploring the Ancient Egyptians. If any of you have a particular interest or specialism in this area, which you would like to share with us, please do get in touch because we would love to capture your enthusiasm and knowledge to inspire the children even more.
As the children are in Year 5/6, on their designated PE days, children will need to wear their PE kit into school. Children should wear a white PE top, black or navy shorts/trousers and trainers. Short shorts and leggings must be worn underneath a skirt. The skirt may then be removed for the PE lesson. The class PE days are:
- Unicorn – Tuesday (Outdoor) & Friday (Indoor)
- Orion – Wednesday (Indoor) & Friday (Outdoor)
- Pegasus – Monday (Outdoor) & Thursday (Indoor)
PE kits should be smart & presentable, as they would wear school uniform. No logos, other colours, football socks etc.
Mobile phones are permitted for Year 6 children, as they may need them when walking to and from school independently. If your child is in Year 5 and there is a specific reason why they need to bring a mobile phone to school, please contact the school office to discuss this and liaise with them accordingly.
All mobile phones must be handed in to the school office at the beginning of the school day. They will be securely stored throughout the day and returned to children at the end of the school day. Mobile phones will need to be turned off fully before entering school and can only be turned on after leaving the school premises. They must not be used anywhere on school grounds.
As always, we will strive to develop positive attitudes and learning habits, while teaching continues to ensure that children’s emotional well-being is at the fore. We will identify next steps in learning so that all children work towards being in line with age-related national expectations.
Each week we will be setting the following homework:
Maths – a week to complete (set Thursday, due Thursday)
- Paper-based arithmetic activities to be sent home.
Reading
- We would expect children to read at least 3 times a week. Please sign your child’s home school diary if they read out loud to you or quietly to themselves, as we will be checking them weekly in order to celebrate our reading attitudes in Friday’s assembly.
Please encourage your child to do their homework independently and on time.
It is an exciting couple of years being in Year 5/6. For many of your children, it will be their last year at primary school. The Year 6 children will no doubt be looking forward to the end of year residential camp and KS2 production, as well as working hard towards their SATs in May. We want them to be happy and successful learners and know that working alongside you at home, they will have the best opportunity to achieve this.
We look forward to catching up with you at the up-coming parent’s evenings on 14th and 15th October 2026 but outside of this, if you have questions for the team, please contact us on the year group email address year5and6@uva.clf.uk or catch us in the playground at the end of the day.
Thank you to those who were able to make our ‘Welcome to Year 5’ session on Tuesday morning and for those who couldn’t, please don’t hesitate to contact us with any further questions!
Thank you for your continued support,
Year 5/6 team
Miss Hynam, Mrs Haberfield, Mrs Lawrence and Mr Huntley
