Year 4 Bikeability Training
Dear Year 4 Parent/Carer,
We are really pleased to be able to give your child the opportunity to participate in Bikeability Training Level 1 on Wednesday 22nd October 2025.
The course is funded by North Somerset Council and the Department for Transport and delivered by Life Cycle UK.
Places are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. The training is provided free of charge, however, to take part your child must:
• be able to ride a bike; this is not a learn to ride course. Children must be able to competently ride a bike. This is not a beginner’s course.
• have their own bike which is safe to use and has two working brakes. To check bike safety please use the ABC on the next page.
• have a correctly fitted helmet. The strap, once secure, shouldn’t be loose or come off their chin. When they shake their head, their helmet should not move.
• be able to bring their bike into school on the day training is held.
Due to the time of year we are holding this training, children will be expected to wear warm clothes. They can wear their own comfortable joggers or leggings and trainers, but they should wear their white polo shirt and royal blue jumper or cardigan. All children must have a warm, preferably waterproof coat. Gloves are also recommended. Children not wearing clothing suitable
for the weather conditions may not be able to participate in the training.
Training will consist of a 2 hour session taking part on school premises.
To be able to participate in this training, the North Somerset/Lifecycle consent form MUST be completed. Please click on the link below which will take you to an online form which we would ask
you to submit no later than Wednesday 24th September 2025.
Once you have submitted your consent you will receive helpful information by email about Bikeability training and how to prepare your child, how to fit their helmet and to ensure their cycle is roadworthy.

A – Air
Check there is enough air in the tyres. Press down all your weight on the handlebars and ensure
the tyres don’t bulge.
B – Brakes
Ensure both your brakes work properly. You should hold each brake on in turn (not both together)
and try to move the bike….it shouldn’t move!
C – Chain
The chain should be oily and not rusty.
Yours sincerely
