Pupils step back in time with historic tour

Year One pupils at Uphill Primary Academy enjoyed a fascinating journey through local history thanks to a guided tour of Uphill village led by local historian Michael Gorley from Historic England.

Uphill is a charming and tranquil coastal village on the southern edge of Weston-super-Mare, bordering the Bristol Channel and the River Axe. Rich in heritage, the village’s history dates back to Roman times and includes historic churches, significant buildings, beautiful nature reserves and a thriving community.

During the tour, Michael shared a wealth of interesting facts about the village’s churches, the old schoolhouse, notable landmarks and even the history behind local post boxes. The engaging walk brought local history to life, helping pupils gain a deeper understanding of the place they call home.

The visit supported the Year One curriculum while inspiring curiosity about the area’s rich heritage. Pupils thoroughly enjoyed the experience and returned to school eager to share what they had learned.

A spokesperson for Uphill Primary Academy said: “We are incredibly grateful to Michael for giving our Year One pupils such an engaging and memorable insight into the history of Uphill.

“Learning about the people, places and stories that have shaped our local community helps bring history to life and encourages children to appreciate the heritage on their doorstep.

“It was a wonderful experience, and the pupils learned so much while having great fun exploring the village.”
