UVA pupils investigate the science of shadows

Pupils in Years 3 and 4 at Uphill Village Academy have been exploring the fascinating world of shadows in their latest science project.

As part of their lesson, the young scientists ventured outside to investigate how shadows are formed and why they change.

Armed with chalk, pupils took to the playground, drawing around their own shadows. This hands-on activity helped them understand that shadows are created when an object blocks a light source – in this case, the sun.

By observing their shadows in real-time, the pupils were able to visualise how light travels in straight lines and how the size and shape of a shadow can change depending on the position of the sun.

This outdoor experiment not only deepened their understanding of light but also provided an engaging way to connect science with the natural world around them.

A spokesperson said: “The investigation forms part of the academy’s commitment to hands-on, inquiry-based learning, encouraging pupils to explore the world like real scientists – through observation, questioning, and experimentation.”
